Lone Star© Cutwork Applique Vest Pattern

The Best of the Lone Star State

The Lone Star vest pattern is a small homage to the state we call home. Cactus, long horns, chili's, pick-up trucks, armadillo's and more. I'm from Michigan but have been living in Texas for 22 years now, the Lone Star vest was my present to my adopted state. And no, I do not have an accent... unless I'm really, really tiiiiirrrrred. Sewing Skill Level 2.

This first version is made from a heavy denim. The string tying the chili peppers together is Candlelight thread allowed to unravel and the 'barbed wire' that walks all over the vest is a combination of several long straight-stitches + a single elastic utility stitch using metallic thread. Playing is good.

Now the second leather version was an experiment. I'd never sewn with leather and wondered how the vest would look. I spent about 2 hours at my local Tandy Leather outlet going through the scrap bins; I think they were very happy to see me leave. No rhyme nor reason to the choices, I just like the pieces. Anyway, I used a glue stick to hold the appliques down to sew (straight stitch, size 16 needle), and made sure to shim overlapping pieces to prevent bulk. Even the trim on the yokes is leather strips. It's comfortable to wear, and if I do say so myself, looks terrific. You never know what you can do until you try. Watch our video demonstration showing you just how easy these vests are to make!
