Coloring Blocks© Tunic-Dress Pattern

Comfortable, Classic, and Timeless

Our Coloring Blocks pattern is a wonderful asymmetrical styled garment that can be worn as a tunic or dress. The back is a mirror image of the front with two - 1" pleats at the shoulder line for more style ease.

I really liked the idea of 'blocks-of-color', that's what started this entire design. Because it's all straight lines, it's very easy to sew. To stabilize the seams I just serged everything - fast and effective; I'm a big fan of fast. One other thing, you don't have to have real buttons holes all the way done the front. You can stitch fake button holes for the bottom four - and top-stitch the lower section in place.

The Pattern Includes
  • All pattern pieces in tissue
  • Full instructions
  • Overall length is 35"
  • Adult sizes 6-28 included

Coloring Blocks is very easy to sew with a shirt-tail type hem, and nine buttons. You can "fake" the bottom four button holes if you like, and sew the lower edge in place.

As a tunic, Coloring Blocks can be worn over a straight skirt, trousers, stirrup pants, and jeans. You may also wear it as a great looking dress.

The design sews up well in drapey fabrics, rayons, batiks, and mid-weight denims.

Please check the chart for sizing information. The hip measurement is based on the fullest hip measurement. The garment is straight on the sides, not tapered. This is a loose fitting garment, so the measurements might seem a bit odd.

Materials Needed
Things That Help

  • All fabrics based on 45" width
  • 2-1/4 yds for pieces: A, D, E and J
  • 2 yds for pieces: B, F and K
  • 2-1/2 yds for pieces C, G, H, H1, I and L
  • Lightweight or fusible tricot interfacing for front open edge facing
  • 9 - 5/8" buttons
  • 1/2" set-in shoulder pads
  • Thread to match
  • For hand sewing you need the right needles. The best needles I've ever used are English hand needles. Size 10 - 20 pieces.

  • The best un-sewing tool ever! Havel's Seam Ripper is for regular and serged seams. It cuts through thread like magic; no tugging, pulling, poking or destroying your fabric.
